How to store your produce to make it last
Ever wonder how you can store your produce to make it last longer? Here are a few tips to help increase shelf life!
Lets start with bunching greens. these include kale, chard, cilantro, mint, and the tops of your root vegetables. first you will want to make a bowl or tub of cold water. submerge your greens inside of the tub for about 5 minutes. next you are going to let the greens dry on a paper towl or in your dish rack for about 10 minutes. shake off any extra water and then your vegetables are ready for the fridge! To increase the shelf life we recommend storing the greens in a plastic or paper bag and leaving the greens in your humidity control compartment.
next we’ll go over bagged greens. these include your salad mixes, arugula, smoothie mixes, microgreens, and spinach. we recommend that before you open your bag of greens, place them in the fridge for an hour to help cool down the greens. because we try to remove most of the moisture before packing, your greens are a lot more delicate. removing moisture before packing helps increase the shelf life. after opening your bag of greens we recommend closing and sealing the bag if putting it back in the fridge.
lastly root vegetables like radish, carrots, and turnips have the best storage life. we recommend removing the tops from your bunches and storing them separately. Root vegetables when connected to the tops put their energy into preserving the greens, so by removing the tops the root will last longer in your fridge.
Bonus tip: for herbs like cilantro, green onion and mint, you can also store them in a small cup of water. submerging only the roots in water. Then place a pastic bag over the greens inside of your fridge. this will make them last even longer!
